Often times, titles of books don't seem to have a significance to the actual story or sometimes the title has a deeper meaning and you're left to discover it for yourself. This isn't the case for The Key To Midnight by Dean Koontz. Joanna, the main character has been having nightmares for as far back as she can remember, and she knows that the dream has something to it, and that it's a memory rather than just a nightmare. She's afraid to discover what really happened to her, but she wakes up around midnight, every single night, in a panic. In her dream there's a man with a cold steel syringe and she knows that he did something to her at some point in her life but she doesn't have a recollection of it.
The title fits this novel perfectly, because the nightmare comes to Joanna each night at midnight and she and her new friend Alex set out to discover the cause. They are essentially, out to find the key to her nightmare... the key to midnight.
So far, I very much enjoy this book, but, then again, I've yet to find a Dean Koontz book that didn't draw me in on the very first sentence. Each time I pick up a new Koontz book I am blown away by his sheer talent and how truly beautiful his writing is. He manages to make the simplest sentence deep and poetic and he throws in different elements to keep you interested. He always has a romance, along with a character with a story that tugs at your heartstrings that all manage to tie together in a mystery. I look forward to reading more of this book as soon as I have some free time, because it has my complete attention already and I'm eager to find out the story behind the nightmares that plague Joanna in her sleep.
